Buddhist Schools

Buddhism Project

Although similar principles guide all Buddhist sects, there are many differences between them in practice. However, when you enter a Buddhist temple, these differences may not be easy to detect. Let's explore the differences between the major Buddhist sects through a photographic essay with narration.

I will assess your work by asking the following questions:

1. Did you use accurate research to complete your photographic essay with a Works Cited page at the end? All should be in English.

2. Did your photographs clearly show the important characteristics of your Buddhist sect? (Temple style, artwork,i.e. Sokkuram Grotto near Kyongju,
images, robes worn by its practitioners, the deities that they may worship, i.e. Guanyin in China, their chant which form part of their Three Jewels, sangha, do they believe in the bodhisattva etc.)

3. Did your narrative clearly explain the key characteristics of your Buddhist sect? Start with the Three Jewels of Buddhism in your search. Find out how your sect deals with them. What might they have adjusted to suit their perspective? For example, do they examine the Pali Canon? For example, the Tripitaka Koreana. What sutras do they follow, i.e. Lotus Sutra?

You will be divided into partnerships (see your class' Wiki) and assigned an East Asian country, it is up to you and your partner to decide which school of Buddhism from that country you would like to research (or I will assign it depending on the class size). When researching a Buddhist sect, I believe you will have strong research results by simply typing the name of the sect and the country into Google, Yahoo or another search engine. Try to consult at least two or three sites when researching and concentrate on the core beliefs that make your sect different from other Buddhist sects as well as images that help portray those differences. You may use wikipedia as a start, but not as one of your sources. Examples of meditation would be great as well. The links above are just the beginning of research you will need to do for this minor project. You might consider also utilizing our school library when attempting this assignment.

EXAMPLE OF PROJECT FOR BUDDHIST SCHOOLS

Note that at the completion of this project you will fill in a retrieval chart containing information about all the sects examined in your respective class.

Possible sects found in each country:
  • China
    • Cha'an
    • Pure Land Sect
    • Tibetan
  • Japan
    • Tendai
    • Shinran
    • Zen
  • Korea
    • Chogye
    • Cheonte
    • Won

**Rubric for Buddhist Sects**
Retrieval Chart for the above. You are to compare your Buddhist sect with any two others. This is a follow up activity to make sure you look at each others work. When done, give this document your name, "Save as" and then upload it to your wiki. It should be at the top of the page. It is due, by the end of class.
